Here’s a camera test with a custom bokeh effect. Using black construction paper, I’ve cut out a small star shape and placed the sheet in front of my lens. In the background is a mess of LED Christmas lights. With the aperture at f/1.8, the blurred background turns into a bunch of star shapes! Unfortunately this effect doesn’t work on wide angle lenses: my primary lens is 28mm and has the highest quality of all of my lenses, but doesn’t work too great with this custom star shape — hence I had to use my cheaper 50mm lens for this shot. I used my 2nd mosaic Super Mario Bros. lamp as a subject:
