The GW-76X Washingtron: The Continental Army’s experimental steampunk Mobile Suit unit!

Continuing the 250th birthday of the United States, I’ve built this comical #LEGO creation inspired by a concept I’ve created about 20 years ago. Back in the 2000s when I was beginning to make animations, I animated a chaotic music video with paper cutouts; think of early South Park style. The video involved former presidents like Abraham Lincoln playing guitar as well as a George Washington mech warrior vehicle! So after all of these years I decided to bring back the mech concept, aptly named George Washingtron! As a fan of classic Mobile Suit Gundam as well as just being an overall dork who enjoys military history, I couldn’t resist making this project.

I worked on this LEGO build right before the 4th of July in 2026, but recently completed it as I was traveling out of state for the holiday weekend. I started with creating the two giant golden Gatling guns – inspired partially by a real life 18th century repeating firearm called the Puckle Gun. Then I built the mech’s giant face, and eventually added the arms, shoulders, legs, and midsection. Throughout the design, I randomly added all sorts of knobs, pipes, chains, gears, and dials as a form of greebling to mimic the steampunk aesthetic. I ran into engineering obstacles with stability for the joints. Due to the heavy weight of the mech’s head, it has a tendency to topple over very easily with the multiple points of articulation.

The final touch was creating the American flag as a shoulder decoration. Originally I built a replica LEGO Betsy Ross flag with the circular 13 stars, however this flag was huge and heavy which caused the mech to fall over. Eventually I rebuilt a smaller flag with the stars in a different pattern, which is actually historically accurate. The real General Washington had his own personal variation of an early American flag whose 13 stars were arranged in a cascading pattern, similar to the arrangement of my LEGO version!
